Earlier this year, Peugeot South Africa extended the 3008 SUV range with the introduction of a diesel-powered engine, to supplement its existing petrol version.

The 3008 Active and Allure models comprise of two engine variants, the 121kw/240nm 1.6 THP Auto and the 110kw/370nm 2.0 litre HDi. In Active spec, the HDi motor sends power to the front wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox (incidentally, the only manual in the range). The oil burner boasts claimed fuel economy of 5L/100kms.

Equipped with the latest generation of Peugeot's driver oriented i-Cockpit, the latest safety technologies as well as radical good looks, the 3008 proves that it has what it takes to be a real contender in the fiercely competitive compact SUV market, going up against the likes of the Honda CR-V, Renault Kadjar, Toyota RAV4 and the Hyundai Tucson to name a few.

But almost shockingly – in a time when the cost of everything is increasing at an alarming rate in South Africa – Peugeot have in fact reduced the pricing on their diesel-powered 3008 Active 2,0 HDi - which now stands at R429 900 – and the 3008 Allure 2,0 HDi auto now at R479 900 – both some R20 000 less that before! They have also streamlined their 3008 line-up by dropping the Allure+ and GT Line+ derivatives, bringing the total models offered down from seven to five.

The entry-level 208 range has also been tweaked. While no models have been dropped from the range, there are massive price reductions for half of the models in the line-up. The 208 Active 1.2 PureTech and the Allure 1.2 PureTech are now priced at R199 000 and R229 000 respectively, representing a R25 000 reduction on the Active, and a R10 000 reduction on the Allure. The two GT-Line models remain priced at R269 900 for the manual, and R279 900 for the automatic.

As a refresher, both cars are powered by a naturally aspirated 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol motor that produces 60kw and 118nm, whilst being available only with a 5-speed manual transmission. They are both capable of 0-100kph in 12.2 seconds, a top speed of 175kph, whilst average fuel consumption is claimed to be sub 4.5l/100kms.

The 208 comes standard with a 3-year/45 000km service Plan, while the 3008 comes with a 4-year/60 000km service plan. A 3-year warranty

Absolutely, yes. At R429,900 for the Active HDi, you're getting a genuinely modern SUV with impressive fuel economy, advanced tech, and French flair that'll make your neighbours properly jealous. The diesel's 5L/100km consumption means you'll actually save money at the pumps, and that 370Nm of torque gives it proper punch when you need it. Sure, the manual gearbox might not be everyone's cup of rooibos, but for this price point, the 3008 delivers premium feels without the premium price tag.
